Michael Joseph Kearins (James Kearns' younger brother) may have changed the spelling of his name just before leaving Ireland. He went to US on the Mohongo Ship (sailed 1851-1872) at age 16 during the famine and stayed with his brother, Patrick in Boston in 1874. He moved to Chicago in October 1874, and married Mary Elizabeth Gannon in 1876. They had 15 children: Mary Elizabeth (1877-1943), James Bartley (1878-1882), Joseph A. (1880-1880), Anne Catherine (1881-1935), Agnes Genevieve (1883-1884), Bartley Edward (1884-1966), Elizabeth Rose (1886-1966), Richard (1888-1935), Edna (1890-1890), Edward Francis (1891-1952), Michael Joseph (1892-1976), James Donatus (1894-1939), Gertrude (1896-1970), Francis Gannon (1899-1940), George Peter (1901-?).
